Crown Point Beach Hotel offers comfortable three-star accommodation close to ANR Robinson International Airport.  The hotel has an ongoing improvement programme.  Recently, Mark and I were invited to spend the weekend in a newly refurbished studio apartment.  We stayed for two nights and sampled the food and facilities on offer, as well as the accommodation.  What follows is our full review of Crown Point Beach Hotel, Tobago.

DISCLOSURE:  We were not charged for our stay at Crown Point Beach Hotel.  We did pay for our food and drink.  All opinions expressed in this review are entirely our own.

Facilities at Crown Point Beach Hotel

Location

The hotel is on Tobago’s beautiful Store Bay.  It is one of the busiest beaches on the island, but hotel guests benefit from a private stretch of sand with a roped-off area of sea for safe swimming.

Store Bay is popular with locals and tourists alike, drawn here by the crystal clear water, soft white sand, and craft market, where you’ll find some nice souvenirs along with the usual tourist tat!  It is also a jumping-off point for boat trips to Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pool.

ANR Robinson International Airport is less than five minutes away on foot, making Crown Point Beach Hotel the perfect location for holidaymakers who don’t want a lengthy transfer after their long flight from Europe or the US.

Accommodation

The Crown Point Beach Hotel is a low-level building with 58 rooms over two floors and a further 18 cabanas located in the grounds.  All the rooms have a view of the ocean from a private balcony or patio, daily housekeeping services, a fully-equipped kitchenette, flat-screen TV with cable channels, air-conditioning, and two beds (either one double and one single or two doubles).

Room Types

  • Studio – located in the main building, these rooms have one double and one single bed and can accommodate up to two adults and one child.
  • One-bedroom apartment – also in the main building, these rooms have two double beds and a separate lounge area to accommodate up to four adults or two adults and two children.
  • Cabana – sited in the hotel grounds, these rooms have a double and a single bed for up to two adults and one child.

Rumour has it that Queen Elizabeth II herself stayed in one of the cabanas when she visited Tobago in the 1960s.  We have it on good authority that she didn’t actually stay, but she did use cabanas 9 and 10 to get changed in.  Guests who stay in these today can boast that they’ve used the same facilities as Her Majesty!  There are photos recording her visit in the hotel’s lobby.

Prices

  • Studio – US$122 – 134 per night depending on the season.  The price is for two adults and a child aged three and under.  It is an extra US$10 per night for a child aged between four and twelve.
  • One-bedroom apartment – US$161 – 177 per night depending on the season.  The price is for four adults or two adults and two children.
  • Cabana – US$ 125 – 139 per night depending on the season.  The price is for two adults and a child aged three and under.  It is an extra US$10 per night for a child aged between four and twelve.

Grounds

The grounds around the Crown Point Beach Hotel are beautifully landscaped with some spectacular trees and strategically placed benches where guests can sit and enjoy the ocean view.  There are paved pathways which lead you from one end of the complex to the other, ending at a gate where you can access Store Bay’s craft market.

Beach

The beach, accessed by a flight of steps from the gardens, is, for me, one of the best features of the Crown Point Beach Hotel.  It never seemed to get too busy while we were there and offered a safe place for families to relax in the sun and to swim in the shallow waters of the bay.

Bar

The bar at the Crown Point Beach Hotel is open all day every day from 10am.  It is a great spot to sit and watch the sea or to enjoy a sundowner.  The prices are comparable with anywhere else on Tobago and the staff are super-friendly.  There is a wide choice of cocktails including the hotel’s own rum punch which is finished with a sprinkle of nutmeg to give a delicious hint of spice.

Restaurant

Blu Restaurant offers casual Caribbean dining with great food and impeccable service.  It is open for breakfast from 6.30 – 10.30am, lunch between 11.30 and 2pm, and dinner from 6.30 – 10pm every day.

For breakfast, guests can choose from continental or a cooked option, either a local dish like saltfish served with tomato, pumpkin and aubergine chokas (fried vegetables of Indian origin) and bake (roast or fried bread rolls), or something more familiar like an omelette or even a full English!

At lunchtime, there are lots of light bites to choose from including delicious chowder, shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, or the Tobagonian favourite, shark ‘n’ bake.

The dinner menu includes seafood options, fresh fish, pasta dishes, and steak.

Swimming Pool

The pool at the Crown Point Beach Hotel does not have lifeguards on duty, but the depths are clearly marked (from 3′ 6″ in the shallow end to 7′ 6″).  It is the perfect temperature to have a cooling dip after relaxing in the sun and large enough for serious swimmers to put in a few lengths!  There are plenty of sun loungers and tables and chairs around the pool for guests to use.

Our Stay at Crown Point Beach Hotel, Tobago

Arrival

Check-in at the Crown Point Beach Hotel is from 2pm.  We arrived at around four and were warmly welcomed by the reception staff.  There was a simple form to fill in, but, otherwise, check-in was straightforward.  They gave us our key, the remote control for our TV, and an envelope with a welcome letter and our personal wifi password.

Accommodation

We stayed in one of the newly refurbished studios in the east wing of the hotel’s main building.  It was clean, spacious, and well-equipped.  The air-conditioning had been left on for our arrival.  It was lovely to walk into such a cool space from the heat of a Tobagonian afternoon!

Our room

The kitchenette had everything you would need if you planned to self-cater, including a microwave oven, a toaster, an electric kettle, an electric grill oven, and all the necessary pots and utensils.  We were only staying for the weekend, so didn’t have need of all of this.  We were, however, very grateful for the large fridge-freezer which already had two trays of ice cubes in it!

Our ensuite bathroom was spotlessly clean and well-presented.  We had hot water on tap which is not always the case in Tobago.  There was even a hairdryer!  I don’t bother packing one when I travel to hot countries but, just because it was there, I used it!  For all of five minutes, until we stepped outside, my hair actually looked quite good!!

There was plenty of storage space in the room, including an impressively large wardrobe that you could step into.  If you were staying for a long period of time, there’s lots of room to put your cases and other belongings.

The beds were made up with crisp white sheets and comfortable pillows, with extras in the wardrobe if you need them.  There were plenty of sockets conveniently placed by the beds and near the dressing table which could easily double up as a desk.

Outside, the balcony was small but the sea view was stunning.  There was a table and chairs for al fresco dining.

Food and Drink

We had breakfast in the Blu Restaurant both mornings we were at Crown Point Beach Hotel.  The first thing to say is that the coffee was excellent!  Good and strong – the perfect way to start the day.

On our first morning, we both opted for the English breakfast.  I know it’s a cliché but after several months away from the UK, we couldn’t resist!  The poached eggs were cooked to perfection and the real pork sausages were a treat!  The following day, we ordered one omelette and one Tobagonian platter.  Both dishes were well cooked and very tasty.

This photo shows a white plate with 3 thin pork sausages, some baked beans, two perfectly poached eggs, some roasted tomatoes, and 2 thick slices of white toast cut diagonally

We didn’t eat during the day, but we saw several plates being served.  All the snack lunches looked well presented and delicious.

We’re not usually cocktail drinkers, but we saw other guests ordering them and succumbed!  The house rum punch was delicious – not too sweet.  I also enjoyed a Blu Special Sour.  It was good to note that the hotel uses paper straws!

For dinner, we shared a portion of shark bites to start with.  There were more than enough for both of us.  These crispy, battered morsels of shark were served with a tartare dipping sauce.  They were very moreish.  I had a chicken pasta dish for my main course and Mark ordered seafood.  The portions were generous and the food was very good.

Pool

We spent a large part of the day in and around the pool.  It was very clean and refreshing.  There were plenty of shady spots for when the heat of the sun got too much.

Our Fellow Guests

During our time at Crown Point Beach Hotel, we chatted to several of our fellow guests.  There were families who seemed to favour the beach over the pool and lots of older guests who didn’t seem to use either, preferring instead to find a shady spot in the gardens to relax with a book.  We spoke to one lady, Val from the UK, who has been coming to Tobago for the past fifteen years.  She always stays at Crown Point – and always in the same room!  We got the impression that the hotel has many such guests who return year after year.  And who can blame them?  It’s the perfect spot to escape the chill of a European or North American winter.

What did we think of Crown Point Beach Hotel, Tobago?

We really enjoyed our stay!!

Given the hotel’s proximity to ANR Robinson International Airport, we were worried that we would be disturbed by aircraft noise.  In reality, we weren’t.  Yes, we heard the planes when we were standing in the car park at the front of the hotel, but, once inside the building, or outside at the back in the gardens or by the pool, we couldn’t hear them at all.  It’s a very cleverly designed building!

Crown Point Beach Hotel has clean, comfortable, spacious rooms with great views, a lovely pool and bar, a restaurant serving good food, and a great location.  I would recommend it for families and older guests alike.  Whether you are looking for a weekend break, a couple of weeks holiday, or a lengthier stay, the Crown Point Beach Hotel is a good choice.  We hope to return one day.
