I have written before about my love of flying. I’ve enjoyed almost every flight I’ve ever been on, but the one we took a couple of weeks ago from London Gatwick to Port of Spain, Trinidad, has to be up there in my top ten flights of all time. Why? Because of the incredible views from the window!

Flying over the UK
The eleven and a half hour flight was completed entirely in daylight. We left Gatwick on a bright, sunny November morning, and flew eastwards along the southern coast of the UK. It was a cloudless sky and we were able to get a perfect view of the Isle of Wight and the ports of Portsmouth and Southampton. My parents-in-law lived on the island for many years, so I know it very well. I recognise the shape of it from a map but have never before seen it so clearly from the air. Even The Needles, the thirty-metre high chalk stacks situated off the western tip of the island, were visible.
From there, it was just a couple of minutes before we were over Chesil Beach, Dorset, the spectacular 29-kilometre long shingle beach which is separated from the mainland by a seawater lagoon.
Trans-Atlantic
Once we’d left the UK behind, we were on the trans-Atlantic part of our journey with little to see except ocean. However, we were flying in and out of high cloud, sparkling white against the vivid blue, in formations so beautiful they took my breath away. I never get tired of watching such wonders of nature.
The Caribbean
The hours passed quickly and soon we were approaching the Caribbean. We were stopping briefly in St. Lucia to drop some passengers off and our first view of the island was stunning. We were even treated to a rainbow appearing between the mountains!
We were on the ground for an hour and fifteen minutes before flying on to Trinidad, a distance of 346 kilometres, which took 40 minutes. We flew over Barbados, Grenada and countless other smaller islands which appeared like jewels in a turquoise sea. It was an awesome sight!
Our approach into Port of Spain afforded us good views of the island of Trinidad and we were struck by the huge swathes of lush, forested land. As we descended, we could pick out flashes of aquamarine, pink and orange amongst the green. These were brightly coloured island homes giving us a sense of the people we were to meet on this amazing island.
